This time Yuri left us in the dark. Or rather, he left the wines in the dark. With the wine poured into Riedel’s Blind Tasting Glass we were derived of visual cues to assess the wines. This focused our attention on our key remaining senses when it comes to wine tasting: smell and taste.

We might have been primed with a presentation on what you can find in terms of aromas and flavours for each grape varietal, and we were given the list of wines (below) to choose from, but that doesn’t mean that opinions on what we were drinking weren’t divided. A great opportunity to learn, or in some cases affirm that there are certain varieties that our personal tastes consistently dislike. Thankfully there was more than enough choice to determine which varieties we might be drawn to.

We were also introduced to the wonderful (yet at times confusing, or simply baffling to engineers and scientists) of sustainability in wine growing: what does organic or biodynamic on the label mean? Wine Folly presents a great overview of these terms if you want a refresher!

For more info on different types of wine (and food pairing suggestions) check out this post on common types of wine.
